Like most of my predecessors I consider objective draughtsmanship the cantus firmus of 'picture making'. Certainly when depicting the child one cannot afford any tendency to allow the graphic accidents of the media chosen to 'fudge' honest observation. One must draw the seen subject with the clarity of a Holbein. Whereas I fully agree with da Vinci, “that within the cracked and peeling plaster of a wall one might imagine a forest of trees, a sea or city scape, whatever phantasmagorias may come to mind … The use of simple line as a representational graphic equivalent is of equal importance. It should not be limited, as da Vinci states “For where one colour ends another begins”.
